Green Tips - Drive 55 (MPH)

On the highway, try not to exceed a speed of 55 miles per hour. Not only are you less likely to get into an accident, but the faster you drive, the more fuel your vehicle consumes per mile.  At 65 mph you're burning 10% more fuel than at 55, according to the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy. At 70 you lose 17% of your fuel economy, and at 75 it’s 25%. The numbers get worse from there. The reason why is simple physics. As your engine heats up at higher speeds, it burns gas faster. Plus, all that increased resistance from air and road drag you down.

2009 Community Spirit Awards Follow-Up

The intimate atmosphere of Sanchez’s top floor provided the perfect setting for a night of sharing in community, celebrating the accomplishments of family, friends, coworkers and local organizations that share the same hope and vision for Grand Rapids.

Over Solomillo de Pavo, Bistec con Pimienta, Banderilla de Pollo and Esparragos en Salsa Romesco, guests enjoyed the antics of the Mistress of Ceremonies, Judge Sarah Smolenski, as she introduced and awarded the final recipients of each community spirit award. Amid laughter and applause the nominees were recognized for their outstanding service and devotion to the spirit of community for which the night was dedicated.

And the award goes to

Neighborhood Stabilization Program (NSP)

There is no bigger threat to our neighborhoods than foreclosures. Lighthouse has always prided itself in being a community development organization that views and addresses neighborhood issues in a systematic way. We think that foreclosures are not about helping families in foreclosure, but rather helping communities stabilize themselves. Lighthouse will take part in the HUD’s Neighborhood Stabilization Program or NSP, as it is now commonly known in the community development field. Through the NSP, Lighthouse will help combat the drastic effects of foreclosed, blighted, and abandoned properties.
